Special effects
A new suite of music videos showcases our film students' work as well as local music.
Dunedin has plenty of local bands producing a variety of original work. Most don't have the resources to produce music videos to accompany their releases. Enter our second year Communication Design ākonga (learners) taking a film course. Local bands each submitted a track and the ākonga chose which track they wanted to work with. After initial meetings with the bands, it was then up to the ākonga what they did.
Not surprisingly, the results are very different, reflecting the different ideas and skills of the ākonga. Their approaches included:
- Beautiful photography of the natural environment (Jordi)
- Filming the band then rotoscoping over the top (Connor)
- Projecting the singer's face onto inanimate objects, and creating frame by frame animations which are refilmed in close up to add textures to the film (Frankie)
- Creating a 60s look for the band, and filming with Super 8 film (Lucia)
- Live action in the studio, playing with lighting and cinematography, then printing and refilming to get an animated look (Ella)
The bands had the final decision about the results, and all were happy for their music video to go live. One band has used their video at an album launch event.
