Siau-Jiun Lim with her work by Siau-Jiun Lim

"Human, you are human"

Bachelor of Visual Arts (Hons) student Siau-Jiun Lim writes about her work.

We say we care about cute dolphins, but we throw our plastic bags into the oceans for the dolphins to choke on. We introduce yellow bins for recycling, but not many items can be recycled. In fact, we even export our rubbish in containers to our poor neighbouring countries. We are urged to preserve the earth's resources by reducing the population, but how? Shall we recommend people not to have children, for the sake of rationing resources? We label EVs as a potential solution for carbon emissions deduction by ignoring the source of energy. We are creators who cannot bear an identity as destroyers; we prefer to be comfortable and think that someone else is responsible for our destructive acts.

We are processing our emotions in the Anthropocene, where the earth has been affected by our so-called civilisation. Put aside our pride as a human to acknowledge the fact that we have fear and doubt for the Anthropocene. We react and seek solutions, any solutions, even if they might not sound logical. In another sense, we feel that it is too easy to pay 10 cents for a plastic bag at PAK'nSAVE. What a wicked 21st century! We still throw our rubbish from the car window along John Wilson Ocean Drive!

Dear human, there is no answer for you here. However, it is time for you to make a choice - a choice on how you want to live in the Anthropocene. Do not feel fear, nor have doubt; we can figure it out together, but no promising future here.

It is our Anthropocene and now.
