Tannock Glen, Opoho, Dunedin by John Henderson

Tannock Glen, a hidden gem in Opoho, Dunedin

Our arboriculture students have been able to assist the Dunedin Rhododendron Group.

"As an Incorporated Society the Dunedin Rhododendron Group is largely dependent on volunteer labour and gate donations for the maintenance of Tannock Glen’s 3.5 acre garden. Shelter trees that were planted over 35 years ago when the garden was founded have been needing removal as the more choice trees have become established. Another tree was a large holly that had become too large for its position and was causing damage to the garden shed nearby. In addition there were a number of weed trees such as sycamore that had become established near the fringe of the garden and we were keen to get them removed as they continue to spread their seed otherwise, and cause weeding problems.

"The Otago Polytechnic arboriculture tutors seemed appreciative of the opportunity to have access to ‘private’ trees for the students to practise on. Besides felling several trees, they also removed limbs from other trees that were in need of maintenance. All material was cut into manageable lengths and lighter material was shredded and left for us to spread as a mulch. The garden gate is never locked and members of the public do make use of the opportunity to visit. The Dunedin Rhododendron Group greatly appreciated and were impressed by the work that was done by the arborists."
