Michael Talaepa | Learning Coach

Ormiston Junior College - February 20, 2018

Born and bred in Central Auckland, I am a Mount Albert Grammar old boy and very proud MAGS alumni. I have a coaching background in strength and conditioning.

I decided to use these skills and my knowledge to grow as a learner, graduating from Unitec with a Bachelor of Sport, majoring in Physical Education. This  led to me completing my Graduate Diploma in Teaching at the University of Auckland. I am the first person in my family to receive a degree and being able to do this for my Nana and my children was one of my greatest joys.

My hobbies include coaching and training the Point Chevalier Rugby League Club and working out daily. As the proud father of two wonderful children, you would think they would be my only love. But I have two other loves - one is all sports [especially basketball] and the other is shoes [specifically Jordans].

One of the reasons I wanted to bring my passion for sport into education is because I am worried that the importance of PE, physical movement and team sports, is no longer valued by some communities. It is not only the physical benefits of sports that are important.

Playing sport, interacting with others, and being part of a team enables people to develop numerous skills. These skills are essential skills that are important throughout our lives and important to the young people of Aotearoa New Zealand.
