Focus on Science

Lesley Mansell —

This term, OJC learners have had some pretty exciting science opportunities. Our lab storage spaces are rapidly being filled with science equipment and our learners are into it!

The year 10 AIP group is learning how to think like a scientist and to begin, we have started by looking into the scientific method.

Now that we know all about hypotheses and variables, we are ready to move on to solving a problem using science. The next step for AIP X is to use the scientific method to solve a problem and separate a given mixture.

In the year 8 and 9 AIP group, we started with a series of workshops about how scientists would think about the concept of change. Most recently, one of the inquiry groups requested a lab on eye dissection, so they could see how the eye works as a part of their inquiry about colour, and get up close and personal with a real cow eye!

We learnt about the different parts of the eye and how they work together in a system, and found key parts like the lens, retina, and the optic nerve. The dissection was very popular, and we are already planning the next one!
