KDEC & OJC
OJC prides itself on being an inclusive place for all learners across every possible walk of life.
KDEC stands for Kelson Deaf Education Centre, and within OJC we have our very own KDEC unit including 18 deaf learners across years 7 to 10. While KDEC has its own school role independent of OJC the two schools look to integrate their learning as much as possible. So while KDEC students get loads of specialist support through their 3 teachers, 2 teacher aides and 2 New Zealand Sign Language interpreters, they participate in aspects of everyday OJC school life as much as possible. For example all learners are part of a Kainga, participate in Whanau Ora and join in during AIP. Specialist numeracy and literacy programs are in place for all of our deaf learners however to make sure their individual needs are purposefully met. OJC prides itself on being an inclusive place for all learners across every possible walk of life. We appreciate the rich experience, unique perspective and opportunities for inclusiveness that our KDEC unit brings our school.
