Rangitoto with Sustainable Coastlines

Katie Clay —

A van ride across Auckland, a ferry ride into the Hauraki Gulf and 11 learners arrived at Rangitoto to take part in a day of ‘immersion in our natural environment’ provided by Sustainable Coastlines.

Learners were encouraged to become part of the environment as we explored the base of Rangitoto, climbing over volcanic rock, identifying bird song and scrambling through Kōwhai forest. We were visited by an Oi, a NZ petrel, and came to learn of how these beautiful birds are being affected by plastic in our oceans and the increase in mammalian predators.

Learners were made aware of this plight and took part in a ‘hut building challenge’ in order to help provide a more robust space for Oi to live.

This project was the start of a partnership with Sustainable Coastlines as we work together to find ways to engage young people in issues to do with their environment.
