Classes have certainly geared up for a term full of scientific learning and exploration. This term we are exploring Planet Earth and Beyond.

If we want our children to understand the world then coming to understand science is critical. If we want our kids to be effective thinkers, is there any better way than having them actively engage with the concepts developed by scientists to help us understand, and to build, the world we live in? What is there not to like about learning about the world?

Not only do children gain scientific knowledge and skills when immersed within the area of science, they also learn valuable life skills that can be transferred. Many of the major challenges and opportunities that confront our world today need to be approached from a scientific perspective.

Let’s have a quick glance of how science is being brought to life at Oromahoe School this term:

We've started tuning in to our inquiry by asking questions and making connections to what we know about the seasons, Earth, the moon and the sun.

We have had a visit from Stella at the council who taught us about Kauri Dieback and what we can do to help prevent it from spreading. The tamariki in R3/4 and 7 learnt lots and loved recreating the size of a Kauri tree that was bigger than Tane Mahuta.

Science Week has been this week which has included a visit by Starlab where everyone spent time inside a big silver dome looking at the night sky.

Night School was a huge success and we have had many positive comments including:

"It was so much fun and the kids LOVED it! Of course the fave was hot chocolate, along with glow in the dark art and comets. Thank you to all the teachers for making it such a special evening and spending their time to put together everything."

"Wow...!!! It was an amazing night!!! So much fun and very organised. Thank you Oromahoe school..... you’re all amazing."

"Fantastic evening! The kids were all so excited and just loved every part. Well done amazing teachers you have gone the extra mile again"

Lots more wonderings, lots more questions, lots more research and lots more experiments to be done this term.

Our kids are inquisitive, curious inquirers!
