Student Leadership, “Growing the leadership potential of every child”
At Oromahoe School we believe in the leadership potential of each and every child. We hold the philosophy that leadership is in all of us.
Leadership is a life skill and one that needs to be fostered within everyday learning context.
The student leadership opportunities we provide for our senior students aim to develop leadership skills that will enhance their personal development, build a sense of pride and self-worth, and foster high levels of engagement by having students active members of the school community. They are more than just a title and badge and require dedication and commitment for an entire year.
All student leaders are expected to be positive role models during playtimes and lessons by promoting our Top 5 values. ( Communication, Safety, Respect, Learning and Fun)
Through mentoring and participation in a diverse range of activities they are supported to develop their leadership skills and traits.
2021 Student Leadership Opportunities
Over the next few weeks our intermediate students will be applying for and taking on extra roles and responsibilities across the school. Just like the 'real world’, the children are expected to apply for these jobs and they are given training.
- House Leaders
- Bus Monitors
- Sport Captains
- Enviro Coaches
- Wet Day Leaders
- Library Leaders
What is being a House Leader?
Our school is divided into four Houses that all students in the school are a part of. These are named after four native trees in our local area: Mahoe, Totara, Rimu and Kowhai. These leaders play an important part in organising the other members of their House for the various sporting and cultural activities that happen at Oromahoe School.
Students are selected for:
- Being a strong role model for other students.
- Having well-developed self management skills and being highly reliable.
- Having energy and commitment while being entrusted to represent the school.
- Having the ability to lead and motivate others through school activities and cultural events.
What is being a Sport Captain?
Our sport captains are expected to be positive role models during playtimes and lessons. Their leadership responsibilities include:
-
Encouraging pupils to participate positively to gain points for their house.
- Assist in running of intra-school tournaments (refereeing, set up and tidy up)
- Assist in running of Sports Days.
- Help maintaining the PE shed.
- Take part leading various other sports related jobs throughout the year.
What is being a Bus Monitor?
Being a bus monitor is an important leadership position within the school. These children are responsible for making our bus trips safe for our students both in the morning and afternoons. The students in this position need to be responsible, diligent and dedicated to fulfil their role. They need to be kind and caring towards our younger students to ensure our younger students feel safe and are happy on their bus trips.
Bus monitors are chosen from intermediate students and year 6 students
What is being a Library Leader?
These leaders learn all about the running of our school library. They learn tasks ranging from shelving, issuing and renewing books, having responsibility for an area of the library and even reading to our junior students. Our Library Leaders learn valuable skills about the organisation of a library while taking the lead on the day-to-day running of one. This year will be challenging as a library leader while the library is being shared by the senior class. Library leaders are chosen from both R7 and R6.
What is being a Wet Day Monitor?
These leaders are responsible for helping within the four junior classes with activities during the days we have wet break and lunchtimes. They interact with younger students and encourage children to play together. These leaders give up their break times to help others and truly show our five school values of communication, respect, learning, fun and safety.
What is being an Enviro Coach?
We always want to improve and further embed environmental principals and sustainability in our school. The school's enviro leaders need to have a passion for the environment and willing to share and lead ideas based around improving environmental issues and sustainability.
I look forward to sharing soon all our new student leaders.
