Ngaru Camp

Kathy Proebstel —

The year 7&8s had a successful 2 night camp on Urupukapuka Island last week as part of their William Pike activity challenge.

Ngaru class had 2 nights camping on Urupukapuka Island.  We arrived at Otehei Bay last Wednesday, then hiked over to the Urupukapuka camping ground. There, we pitched tents and set up camp.

Activities included snorkelling, hiking, cooking and beach clean-ups.  The clean-ups were in support of 'Sea Cleaners' who came to inform and inspire us about ways to protect our waterways, seas and oceans.  We collected 150 litres of rubbish (3 clean-sacks) from 3 beaches and we were not expecting that!  There were various types of plastic picked up, in all sorts of shapes and forms - from toothbrushes and shoes right down to the smallest micro plastic or piece of nylon.

Students were in charge of cooking their own evening meals.  On Thursday night we had a 'Master-Chef' competition.  There were some very creative presentations and meals.

As always, we are grateful for the support of the parents who came to camp, namely Jessie, Daniel and TK. Whaea Erica and Nuka were there too and completed the team. Also, thank you to everyone who helped out with transport, moving luggage and lent us tents.  Everything goes towards a rewarding and fun experience for the kids! We are already planning and looking forward to our Adventure Camp in 2022!
