A day at Karitane

Emma Moore —

Year 10 Food and Nutrition, along with Years 10,11 and 12 Māori classes had a successful day trip to Karitane on Tuesday.

The weather held out, and it was a fresh, yet stunning day.

Students were welcomed by local iwi from the Kati Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki where they were greeted and invited to learn about the local area with regard to the local people, with an emphasis on kai and kaimoana. Students visited the beach, the historical pā and gathered cockles and pipi. Some had never gathered or tried these foods before. It was deemed successful with comments such as "This is much better than I thought it was going to be" from a student in knee-deep winter warm water.

It was an enriching experience for both students and staff, leaving us wanting to learn more. We can't thank Kiri, Kane, Julia and whānau enough for sharing their knowledge and experiences with us.

Thanks to Mr Mahutariki, Mr Thomas, Mr Densen, and Mrs Woodhouse for assisting with the visit.
