Otago Boys' High School Hostel Redevelopment Fund

Des Smith —

Stock Drive - The Stock Drive initiative came about following discussions with some Old Boys including Roger Landels, Brent Taylor and Brett Burgess.

We met on a number of occasions at Roger’s home in Balclutha where we were well hosted by Susan and worked on a system that would best achieve the outcome of raising ongoing funds for the hostel redevelopment. I was pleased to take on the task of phoning many Old Boys, Parents and Friends of the school to ask them to support the Stock Drive. I was humbled with the response I received and enjoyed spending many hours on the phone not only discussing the project but also reminiscing about the many wonderful times we all had at OBHS and in particular at the hostel.

We currently have over 60 farmers, male and female, who have offered their support to the Stock Drive. I would like to reach a target of 100 so if you receive this newsletter and are interested in finding out more about the stock drive initiative, then please make contact with me and I will send you out a package of information.

I would especially like to thank Roger Landels for the effort he has made in getting all the different meat companies across the line. Now that this has been achieved, farmers are putting aside stock to donate to the project, which is really appreciated. I have heard from a number of farmers who have lambs and other stock waiting to be fattened - they will then go to the works and a donation will be deposited in the Foundations Account. This donation is tax deductible so we have a process in place that as soon as the money is received, a receipt is posted together with a thank you letter from the school as well as a personal note from me.

We are looking forward to a good season ahead for farming and therefore anticipating we can raise significant money to assist in this wonderful project.

Thank you all for your support.

Kind regards,

Des Smith MNZM
