Debating Competition Commences

Maria Zammit —

Following on from last week’s trial round, this week was the first round of the Dunedin debating competition.

Otago Boys' fielded two complete teams. Matthew Visser was so keen to compete he took part as a member on a swing team. The topic under debate was whether soldiers should be made to forget their wartime experience.

The lads switched up their teams this week, though both were arguing the affirmative position. Team 1 consisted of Luke Geddes, Liam Connolly and Boudewijn Keenan. They debated OGHS, securing a win by 10 points. Liam was highest speaker in the debate with Luke taking out second highest and Boudewijn in third.

Meanwhile, Team 2 consisting of Daniel Visser, Michael Crosson and Lachlan Williams, faced Kings 3 in a close debate. The closing arguments scored the same and the title of highest speaker went to three students. Daniel and Michael shared this accolade with Lachlan only a single point behind. In the end, Team 2 got over the line by 2 points securing the win.

Congratulations to both teams. Next week our Junior teams will take part in their first debate for the year.
