First Hockey Tournament For The Season

Konrad Hanson —

The Otago Boys' 1st XI went away to Timaru in the second week of the holidays, for the annual ANZAC Tournament.

With five games in three days, it was a great way to start the season. With a few new boys in the team, we all managed to get a number of weeks worth of learning and development before the season has started. With a busy inter-school season approaching, these three days have been very useful in getting us up to speed.

On ANZAC day, the team put on their school uniform and headed to Caroline Bay for Timaru's 100th ANZAC day service. Caroline Bay was a beautiful setting for the parade, and the boys witnessed a poignant ceremony. After our own school ceremony in the last week of term, seeing another community come together to remember those who have taken part in war, really emphasised what the statistics in history books really mean. Hearing personal stories from different communities, reminds us of the vast and lasting impact of war.

It was a great few days, and a wonderful opportunity to get in plenty of hockey without interrupting any in-class time. We were lucky with the weather, apart from the fog delay on day three, and Timaru Boys' High School were fantastic hosts.
