The #SleepQ (Quality) study is a study of teenage sleep.

Conducted by an interdisciplinary team of researchers from the University of Otago, including researchers with expertise in sleep (Prof Barbara Galland), physical and metabolic health (Dr Kim Meredith Jones), and neuroscience (Master’s, student Cameron Tang), and in collaboration with Prof Leigh Signal, a sleep and fatigue expert from the Sleep-Wake Centre at Massey University.

This study aims to find out what good or bad sleep quality means to teenagers by first measuring their sleep with a wristwatch type device (called an actigraph), and then asking them to rate their previous night’s sleep quality and sleepiness, concentration, and mood the following day.

Prior to conducting the study, participants will be provided with a study information sheet (attached fyi) so they can make an informed decision about whether they would like to consent to participate. The study is entirely contactless - but will require a brief face-face meeting over Zoom to go over how the study will run. Everything else is completed on-line and actigraph wristwatches couriered to and from participant’s homes. After completing the study, participants will be asked if they'd like to receive koha ($40 JB Hi-Fi voucher) as our acknowledgement of their commitment to our sleep research.
