Elaine Kelly —

It is my pleasure to announce the achievements of four boys in the National Division 2 tournament for Water Polo which took place during the Term 3 holidays.

Four of our players Whetu Price Koopu, Ethan McGregor, Eddie Wright and Tim Orchiston all attended this tournament played leading roles in Otago’s success and did themselves, their families and the school proud.

All of these boys played exceptionally well as members of the Otago U16 Boys Water Polo team. The team won the silver medal and all the boys played very well especially after what has been a hard season. It was the first time an Otago side had made the final and the first time it had won a medal.

On the way to the final, Otago had wins over leading North Island sides Marist, Manawatu, Tauranga and North Harbour before beating Southland, which was unbeaten after pool play and the top qualifier, 8-3 in the semi-final. The semi-finals and finals of the Wellington tournament made for a fantastic watch. In particular, Eddie Wright came away with the accolade of MVP of the tournament for his goalkeeping which was, as usual, exceptional. Ethan McGregor was also the top goal scorer.

Water Polo continues this term with matches starting today and boys should keep a regular eye on the notices and their emails for any announcements. OBHS will be fronting a junior squad at the upcoming South Island Secondary School’s tournament in Christchurch in November. It is particularly important that parents of the boys in the SISS Squad check that they have both completed the google form to give permission for their son to attend and that they have paid the deposit as well as any further payments, as per the payment schedule that was sent out at the end of last term.
