Gale force winds and showers made day one of the trip difficult.

Hoping to ride from Lake Ohau to our Twizel accommodation, the ride had to be modified considerably. While only about 10km, it did give everyone a chance to find their cycle legs before Monday’s biggest day. 

Fortunately, the weather had improved considerably for this, and while there was still some wind about, it was going to assist us. The lead group did well directing the group from Lake Pukaki to Lake Tekapo, a ride of about 30km. At the end we were able to enjoy the hot pools which was a welcome relief to the legs. 

The third day we gave the bikes a rest and walked up the Hooker Valley. While Mt Cook was hidden, there was still plenty of spectacular sights to see. Having had lunch, we then drove back to ride from the previous day’s start to the Salon shop and Information Centre at the bottom of Lake Pukaki. This was a fun section that included a fun downhill. 

Having overcome a late night, with some boys making a lot of noise, the group were quick to pack up and get in the vans to Kurow. Here the last group took us along a section of trail following the Waitaki River towards the Maori Rock Art. After re-loading the trailers, the group then returned for the end of school. 

Students will now evaluate the planning and execution of their trip as part of an assessment task.
