Fives Championship to return

Gwyn Pratley —

After the best part of a decade in hiatus the historic OBHS Fives Competition is set to return in Term 4.

After the best part of a decade in hiatus the historic OBHS Fives Competition is set to return in Term 4.

Term 4 will see the return of Fives on the traditional school Fives Courts. It is proposed that a ‘Junior School Championship’ will run with all Year 9 and 10 boys welcome to enter and try their hand at the sport for the first time. Entries will be taken from lunchtime this Tuesday at the Fives Courts.

Preliminary rounds will be played with a tennis ball so players can acquaint themselves with the skill-set required, however the final series will be played with the clubs newly acquired traditional Eton Fives Association balls that have arrived from the UK (pictured above). Boys will also be able to practice with these balls during lunchtimes at the Fives Courts.

The schools junior champion will also become the recipient of the historic 1883 Schools Fives Cup that is currently on display in the school museum with it to be presented at the junior prize giving to the 2016 OBHS Junior Fives Champion.

If any boys would like to pre-register their interest and be put into the draw or if you have any queries about the 2016 competition please email Mr Pratley gwyn.pratley@obhs.school.nz or contact this years competition organisers Mitch Pryde or George Thomas.
