2019 Careers Week
Term 2 is a busy term with all our students involved in careers related activities.
Starting on Monday, the 6th of May, Year 13 students had the opportunity to attend Tertiary Open Day, hosted by The University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic.
This week Careers activities have been provided for all year levels. In form times classes were presented with a range of relevant careers websites and students were challenged to investigate and use the tools section on the Careers NZ website.
During lunchtimes this week young old boys Henry Ryan (rural banker), Damian Foster (financial advisor) Nathan Hannah (science, statistics, sport and exercise student) and Flynn Steele (law and earth science student) shared their experiences as students of OBHS, university and career professionals. Richard Hemi (surveying lecturer) also spoke to a group at lunchtime on Wednesday. Other presenters Matt Dale (freshwater scientist) and Josh Bates (teacher in training) will visit with classes and groups.
On Thursday morning our Mini Careers Expo was held in the Shand. The Otago Polytechnic, NZ School of Tourism, Queenstown Resort College, Southland Institute of Technology, Traffic Management and Control, Dive Otago, Defence Force NZ, ETCO, BCITO (Construction), MITO, Road Freight Transport, Your Education and Otago University all set up stalls where they provided information, gave advice and discussed entry requirements to their respective organisations to all Year 13, 12 and 11 students.
A major aim during the week was for students and teachers to explore careers related resources. The websites below provide excellent information and interactive tools to help all students in their career decision making.
Next week on Thursday, June the 13th, Year 12 students will attend the Dunedin Schools Careers Expo in the Town Hall, where approximately 40 exhibitors have registered. We hope students will take full advantage of this.
