Exploring different environments

Kate Hope —

Year 11 Geographers are used to asking the big questions.

For their last assessment students are focusing on how and why people use environments and how can we use land sustainably.

We have broadened our outlook from Oceania Gold mine at Macraes Flat to also include Dairy Farming on the Taieri Plains. This has given students contrasting land uses and a greater understanding of their overall assessment on what are the consequences on people and place of these activities.

Students were given a tour of the processing plant at Macraes and were able to see the scale of the operation. Once again, we thank Gavin Lee and his team for their presentation and time. A significant discussion for the boys was the different job opportunities and the average wage of the workers.

A quick stop was had in Middlemarch on the way down to Mark and Tracy Adam's farm in the Taieri Plains. Here some of our more urban students were able to connect why they were told to bring gumboots!! Mark had students milking, tasting the milk and feeding the calves. Such a great opportunity for our boys to connect their classroom learning into the real world.

A huge thank you to Mark and his team for the opportunity. The quote of the day from a student (we'll keep them nameless) after drinking some fresh milk "oh my goodness, it just tastes like milk."
