Tastebuds put to the test

Mark Hooper —

Our scholarship Statistics students took part in a blind Triangle Taste Test to try and differentiate between three different types of foods.

This is a test many food companies use to test new products to see if they can be distinguished from previous ones or against competitors.

Our results: Watties vs Heinz T-sauce - easily distinguishable and statistically significant - 7 out of 9 boys could spot the odd one out. Dark blue milk vs light blue milk and Bluebird vs Pams ready salted chips, only 5 out of 9 boys could spot the odd one out with these items.

5 out of 9 is a result we would accept if the boys merely guessed, so not statistically significant. The boys will use these results to delve deeper into the theory and practice of these tests.

The Scholarship Statistics exam is only 4 and half months away!
