OBHS v Columba College - Prefect Netball

Michael Crosson —

Thursday lunchtime saw the OBHS prefects descend into Columba College for the annual Prefect Netball match.

The lads were strangely fired up for this one, and after winning against Otago Girls' and St Hilda’s, the allure of a clean sweep motivated us into what can only be described as a clinical showstopper.

Similes like “poetry in motion”, “champagne netball”, “domination station” all spring to mind when thinking of our performance yesterday afternoon. Columba started off with tepid enthusiasm early in the first quarter and plenty of pre-game smack talk, but that was no match for the determined focus which the OBHS boys brought to the table. Razzle dazzle from centres Luke Geddes and Jacob Cumming directed traffic into the end zone where big men Reuben Cook and Jono Burnside picked off baskets like fruit off a tree. Seb Whiston providing sensational athleticism when necessary, and even occasionally when not.

Sensing devastation Columba rallied somewhat in the second, providing semi-stringent defence, although a lack of their own goals thanks to defence from Semisi Tupou Taeiloa and Ben Burrow failed to keep them truly firing on all cylinders.

Then the third quarter hit them, like a freight train through a picket fence. Shot after shot just sneaked its way through their net, OBHS putting on many many points while Columba failed to get past our lockdown defence, to the point where their own fans couldn’t bear to watch the onslaught. Capitalising on their demoralised nature, OBHS finished strong while the students filed out of their hall. The fourth quarter saw us ease off a little, allowing a few wayward goals their way to prevent a complete breakdown of inter-school camaraderie. Despite that, the scoreboard probably sums up the match the best, 31-11 (to Otago Boys').

Good game Columba, and our thanks for a great, successful day out.
