Mt Aspiring Lodge Report

Richard Roe —

Over last weekend (Thursday 24th - Monday 28th November) the OBHS Lodge hosted a group of 20 PhD students and lecturers from Otago University on a writers retreat. They made the most of the isolated location to concentrate on their work; writing thesis, preparing presentations and critiquing each others work.

The weather played its part for the first couple of days with persistent rain and snow on the hills making sure that minds were kept sharp and outside distractions minimised. With clear sunny weather on Monday morning the valley was looking stunning with all the fresh snow and the participants were able to get out to appreciate their surroundings and explore the area.

Our generator coped well with over 100 metres of extension leads and numerous multi-boxes supplying power to a vast array of electronic devices. It was quite unnerving for me being in a full Lodge working in total silence - quite a contrast to a Year 10 camp!

Feedback from the group was extremely positive and they are likely to be back again for similar retreats in the future.
