Debating Update

Maria Zammit —

This week it was the juniors turn to debate.

Their topic was using a quota to ensure half of New Zealand’s Parliament was made up of women. Javara Clark, Rohan Williams, and Mikko Johnston were arguing for it against a team from Taieri. Their argument included a well-considered model, with the adjudicator stating that it had been a close debate. Unexpectedly, it was a 3-point loss.

In other debating news, the senior OBHS 1 team, consisting of Luke Geddes, Michael Crosson, and Boudewijn Keenan had their catch up debate from the last round. Their topic was quite convoluted. The moot was, “In response to conspiracy theorists, this house prefers the approach of spreading beneficial conspiracy theories rather than education”. They were arguing that beneficial conspiracy theories should be used to combat misinformation, running a complicated argument that relied on examples taken from many of today’s problems. It worked – OBHS secured the win.

Nice job lads!
