Vertical Form Classes and Whanau Class

Mark Hooper —

Every boy is a member of a vertical form class based on their house. This means you are in a house group of Year 9-13 boys.

This gives Year 9 boys older ‘brothers’ to look to and learn from. Form class meets Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. This is your home base. Wednesday form time is Junior Assembly – held in the Auditorium. Friday form time is House meetings.

Your form teacher is an important person. You should go to him or her for help at any time. You can, however, approach any member of the staff in an emergency. Your form teacher has responsibility for your pastoral care and should be the first point of contact for parents if there are issues to discuss or concerns to raise. He or she is available to talk about all matters. They will refer you to someone else for further support if necessary.

Whanau Class

Nau mai, haere mai, tauti mai ki Te Kura Tuarua o Ngā Tama Toa o Ōtāgo.

Otago Boys’ High School (OBHS) provides an environment that recognises te taha tinana, taha wairua, taha hinengaro and taha whānau as paramount to enable our ākonga (students) to flourish and succeed as Māori. We offer a wide range of academic and vocational subjects, as well sporting and cultural activities.

Te Whānau Aronui is the OBHS staff/student/whānau group that was set up to support student success as Māori, through:

  • Positive connection to people - students, staff, whānau, community and iwi (whakawhanaungatanga).
  • Positive connection to place – school, rohe, iwi, whenua (tūrangawaewae).
  • Positive sense of self in relation to others – to enjoy and achieve education success as Māori, equipped with the tools necessary to be a lifelong learner (piki ake).

Our Facebook page and email list has been set up for whānau to communicate and share information, as well as promote events, resources and opportunities. Hui are held each term for ākonga, whānau and staff to meet and share information, achievements, opportunities and challenges.
