In the first weekend of the school holidays we had a small team go to the South Island Road Cycling Championships, in Christchurch. This event comprised of an individual time trial and a road race the next day.

James Gardner performed admirably, securing a third placing in both the time trial and road race for Under 15 year old boys. Racing in the Under 16s, Matt MacDonald finished 6th in the time trial and 5th in the road race. Together the pair rode Otago Boys’ High School into 19th place overall for the event (without even contesting the team time trial!).

Given the timing of the event, the pair showed considerable dedication and determination to keep training over what is essentially the off-season.
