South Island Secondary Schools Curling Championships

Matthew Lunam —

On Friday last week we headed down to the Dunedin Ice Rink for the South Island Secondary Schools Tournament. The tournament is held every year in either Naseby or Dunedin. It is a round-robin competition, over a span of 3 days.

We went up against 5 different boy teams from secondary schools in the South Island. Our first game was against Maniototo Area School. The Maniototo team have won the competition the most out of all the other competitors, so were expecting to take the trophy home yet again. Half time hit and we were down by 2 points (3-1), hoping to come back in the second half. We played a strong second half taking the win by 3 points (6-3). Our second game was against the Kavanagh College boys team, another hard opponent. Full time score being 6-4, another victory we were all proud of.

The second day arrived and so did we, our first game crushing the John McGlashan team 14-1 (final score), giving us a confident lead in the competition. Our next opponent was Logan Park High School, who were also playing very well. Once half time hit the score was even at 2-2, and in what should have been full time, the score was again even at 4-4, resulting in an extra-end to decide the winning team. A very close last end, giving us the win by a single point with a final score of 5-4.

The final day landed upon us, with our last game being up against a younger Maniototo team. An entertaining last game with a final score of 7-4, declaring us the winners of the competition as we had won every single game we played, so no finals were needed.

Overall, it was a great 3 days with a lot of fun. This result has made us push for the National Competition which will be held in Naseby in a couple of months. We aim to bring home another trophy as well as another gold medal.
