A Message From The Rector

13 Reasons Why

Recently Netflix released a series called 13 Reasons Why. This series has had significant publicity as it deals with a very hard issue - that of teenage suicide.

The programme is, I understand, confronting.

I am an educator of young men; I am certainly not an expert on this issue. What I think is important is that parents understand it is very likely that your son may watch this. The New Zealand censor has classed this as RP18, that is those under 18 years of age are advised to watch with their parents.

I am aware of some schools that have advised their students and parents to not watch it. Unfortunately I think that is not realistic. Our young men will access it. Instead I would encourage families to discuss this; and make a decision as a family and take the role of adults in this decision.

This topic is extremely difficult to broach or to speak about. It is something that touches a school community too often. What I want our community to know is that there is always an alternative, there is always someone who will help and if you do not get the help you believe you need the first time keep asking.

If you feel this is an issue for your son then contact the professionals for advice; www.lifeline.org.nz/Lifeline 24/7 Helpline 0800 543 354.
