OBHS Sports

Craig Cumming —

As we are close to the end of the year, we use this time in the Otago Boys' sports department to review and reflect on the year and look at what has gone well and what we need to do to improve or make changes for the future.

Sport plays an important part to the health and well being of boys at our school and is an important part of the fabric that makes up our culture inside and outside of the archway on Arthur Street. Our mission for sport is: "To allow our boys to be as good as they want to be".

We offer the opportunity to be involved in 35 sports during the summer and winter months, and with a participation rate of 85% of our boys playing at least one sport we are proud of what we are delivering and overall believe we are achieving our goals. We are focusing heavily on our programmes that we provide and investing time to improve them to make sure that every boy is able to receive the experience that they deserve.

The focus for 2022 is making sure we invest in developing our leaders in all our programmes so they develop their skills to enhance their knowledge to be able to deliver these programmes.

With such a high numbers of boys playing sport it is does bring challenges, especially around resourcing sport and this is only going to be tougher in the future. While it is important for the boys to have fun and enjoy sport, so too is it important that our coaches, managers, volunteers get the same experience. We will be focusing on this in 2022 and we need to provide greater leadership in this space.

On that note, I would like to thank all the Otago Boys' High School community for their support in 2021. To our coaches, managers, volunteers and sideline supports, thank you for everything you have given this year. It is greatly appreciated by myself as the director of sport and most importantly the boys, as the are the reason we are involved.
