OBHS Rowing Update

Kirsty Dunhill —

The Otago Boys' High School Rowing team are in full training mode now as the new season commenced at the start of term 4.

The boys have been working hard to build their fitness levels on the rowing machine and are making technical improvements out on the water. With a fantastic intake of novices, our team is looking to include just over 40 boys this year. We have 3 dedicated coaches who are putting in many hours to supervise the training and are guiding the rowers to reach the competitive levels necessary to qualify and attend the Maadi Cup next March at Lake Karapiro in Cambridge.

Within the past 3 weeks we have already competed in 2 events. The first, was a regatta on the Dunedin harbour which involved all of our athletes, including the new novices who have had only  3 weeks in a boat and are still very much learning the basics of our sport. They did the school proud and we were competitive in all age groups, with many top 3 placings. On Sunday the 11th November all the rowers took part in the Indoor Rowing Championships, again held in Dunedin. The boys competed in various sprint events and ended the day with 3 relay teams racing in the final event. We gained gold medals in all age groups as well as quite a few silver and bronze medals. We also took home the trophy for the second year in a row as Relay Champions for 2018.

Looking ahead, the rowers have 2 more regattas to attend prior to the Christmas holidays and many more hours out on the water. We are training hard to improve on last seasons strong results.
