New Zealand Orienteering Championships

Theo Nicholson —

Last weekend a group of eight boys went up to Oamaru to compete in the New Zealand National Orienteering Championships.

Overall, we had a very successful competition.

Saturday held the long distance event at Kuriheka and everyone did very well. Some standouts were Ollie Bixley winning the M18A grade, Max Cunninghame placing 2nd in the M14A grade and Oliver Hobbs winning the M14B grade. Well done on an awesome performance boys!

Sunday was the middle distance event on a very challenging map near Elephant Rocks (Duntroon). The boys found the highly detailed map around old gold diggings very challenging, but still managed some good runs such as Max Cunninghame placing 5th (14A), Moss Pelvin coming 9th (16A), Mr Zani coming 2nd in M21AS grade and Isaac Lee winning M18B. Good job all of you!

On the last day we had the relay event on a farmland map near Maerewhenua. We had no podium finishes but some of our best runs were Ollie Bixley’s relay team coming 14th in the mixed open and Theo Nicholson and Isaac Lees relay team coming 6th in their grade.

From the event, a number of boys have been invited to the Southern Tempest South Island team for a competition in Wellington at Queen’s Birthday which includes Ollie Bixley, Moss Pelvin, Max Cunninghame and Luke Geddes. Well done on a well deserved honour boys!
