Otago Secondary Schools Athletics

Lindy Marr —

It was a privilege to take a team of 29 to the Otago Athletics Championships on Friday and Saturday held at the Caledonian ground.

What wonderful weather and what wonderful young men!

Friday night saw Luke Moffitt win the pole vault with a record of 3.6 metres and the 300 metre hurdles, while George Hamilton ran away with the 3000 metres in an impressive fashion.

In fact, OBHS took: 1st place – George Hamilton, 2nd place – Jake Owen, 3rd place – Matthew Bolter. Gus Oberlin-Brown won his 3000 metre age group, Ruie Hyslop following him in 3rd place, while Jamin Millar and Dawa Tamang won their respective hammer throws. These boys set the tone for Saturday.

Of note are the following senior boys who completed their last Otago Secondary Schools Championships in fine form: Jamin Millar (1st – hammer throw, 1st – shotput, 1st – discus, 3rd – javelin), Luke Moffitt who equalled the Otago record for the triple jump, Cole Gibbons who won the 200 metres and Hadlee Edmunds getting a personal best as he raced away with the 100 metres title. Cole, Luke, and Hadlee then combined with Owain Harris to win the 4x100m senior relay.

A number of the U15 rugby team were talked into participating and they performed exceptionally well. They are a very talented bunch and I look forward to them continuing in athletics in their time at OB’s. Overall every boy managed a place in either their event or a relay team.

Thank you to all for your effort and support of each other. It was a great event.
