Senior prize giving

OBHS —

Senior prize giving was held on Tuesday, 1 November at the Regent Theatre. It was a special occasion to celebrate the student's success throughout the year.

Abdul Obaidullah - Dux

This young man aims to excel in everything he does, reflected in his being awarded Academic Blues. Over three levels of NCEA,  Abdul has 213 Excellence credits. This year every internal assessment and result in the recent school examination has been at Excellence. He is a three-time centurion. Described by his teachers as hardworking, thoughtful and eager to learn, Abdul’s GPA is a perfect 4.0. Additionally, Abdul is involved in the wider school as a member of the school council. He plays cricket and football. 

He has been awarded: 1st Chemistry, 1st Statistics, 2nd Biology, 2nd= Business Studies and 2nd Physics


Daniel Hayman - Proxime Accessit to Dux

This young man has pursued Excellence in all areas over his five years at OBHS. He has represented the school in adventure racing, cross-country and orienteering. Daniel is a member of the OBHS Accelerated Learning programme. As a Year 11 and 12, he successful studied NCEA Level 2 & 3 Geography and History. In 2021 he gained a Scholarship in Geography. This year, he has completed two papers through the University of Canterbury, receiving an A for Politics and is currently awaiting the Journalism result. He has gained Excellence endorsements at all three levels of NCEA. He has received Academic Blues and is a three-time Centurion.


2023 Head Boy - Simi Puni

Simi is a well-liked and well-respected young man. He secured NCEA Level 1 with a Merit endorsement last year, as well as gaining Merit endorsements in four individual subjects. In addition to his scholastic pursuits, Simi has also participated in the wider school community – his sporting focus centres on volleyball and rugby, and he has also been recognised for his contributions to the Pasifika community in the school. Simi is a fantastic role model and will be a fine leader in our school.


2023 Deputy Head Boy - Matthew Bolter

Matthew is known for his academic prowess. His scholastic achievements include obtaining Level 1 and Level 2 NCEA at Excellence, as well as securing Excellence endorsements for three Level 2 subjects as a Year 11 student. He is also an outstanding athlete, with a particular focus on athletics. In addition, he participates in the wider school community. Matthew is the chair of our school council. He demonstrates the ‘hand up, not out’ ethos of the school. Matthew sets high standards for himself and will be a fine role model in our school. 


2023 Head Boy of School House - Hamish Leyser

Hamish is a hard-working young man who exemplifies the school value of perseverance. His sound work ethic has enabled him to secure over a third of his Level 2 credits at Merit, and he is on track for Centurion status in 2022. He has also engaged fully in school life, participating in a range of sports with a particular focus on cricket, rugby, and hockey. However, it is for his natural leadership ability that Hamish has been appointed Head Boy of School House – he will be an excellent role model and leader for our school.  


Aaryan Alexander - Alexander Wilson Memorial for Best All-Round Boy 2022

An outstanding individual, Aaryan has involved himself in all areas of school life. He is Deputy Head Prefect and is also a top Badminton player, being the South Island U19 Champion in singles, doubles and mixed doubles as well as being the Otago Senior Rep player of the year. Aaryan also plays volleyball for the school and has made the occasional appearance for the mighty 4th XI football. Additionally, he is a member of the senior debating team. Added to all these pursuits, Aaryan is also a top academic. He has gained prizes this evening for his academic achievement. A considerate, respectful and honourable young man, Aaryan is thoroughly deserving of this award.
