Year 10 - Recipes to feed a family of four

Emma Moore —

Year 10 students have been learning how to create meals that are old fashioned 'staple' meals and that have key cooking elements in them - for example being able to cook rice and pasta. Students have learned how to sharpen knives, interpret recipes and follow them.

Over this term, students have made a variety of dishes which include macaroni cheese, spaghetti bolognese, stir-fry, shepherd's pie and frittata. These have led them towards finding recipes that they could easily feed a family of four on. These recipes needed to be easily extended, quick and be a 'balanced plate' with regard to nutrition.

Students had to make sure that their intended recipe met these guidelines. They had to make adjustments to the recipe to ensure these where met. Here are a few from today. A 'healthy' butter chicken, chicken katsu, pizza (note the vegetables on top), beef and broccoli stir-fry and teriyaki chicken.

The students did a mighty job, as these were all completed within an hour.
