In a first for the school, four boys have made the 55 strong NZ Athletics team for the Oceania Games to be held in Suva from the 28th June to 1st July. There will be over 20 countries attending and both Australia and New Zealand have named strong teams. 

This is Liam Turner’s (17) second year of making the team following strong performances (3 Golds and 1 Bronze) in Tahiti last year in the Under 18 division. He is nationally ranked 3rd in the 800m and 4th for 400m in the Under 20 division after a strong 2017 season. This year he will compete in the Under 20 - 400m and 800m in Suva. 

For Anton Schroder, Cameron Miller and Nathan Hill it is their first time with the NZ team. Anton Schroder (17) has also had a strong season with him claiming the Under 20 NZ Javelin title at the National Track and Field Champs in Hamilton. He is nationally ranked 2nd for the Under 20 division in Javelin and this is the event he will compete in, in Suva. He also won the Gold medal at the secondary schools nationals in 2016. 

Cameron Miller (17) has had a busy season seeing him claim the NZ Under 18 Combined Events (Decathlon) Title in February. He is nationally ranked number 1 in the decathlon for Under 18 and this is what he will compete for in Suva. He also performs at a high level in High Jump, Long Jump and Discus. 

Nathan Hill (16) also joins the team after a strong season in the Under 18 1500m and 3000m. He broke the Otago/Southland Secondary Schools 1500m record which had stood for some time. 

This is a great reward for these 4 boys who have been consistent performers over the past few years. It is also reward for their coaches Mike Weddell - Liam, Raylene Bates – Anton, Brent Ward and Dave McNeil – Cameron, and Dave Stinson for Nathan; along with their family and support network over many years. 

Athletics has been rejuvenated at the school over the past few years with the senior 4 by 100m relay team setting the fastest time this year nationally at the recent SouthIsland Secondary Schools meet. The school had 16 podium finishes at the South Island Secondary Schools meet from a team of eighteen competitors. A fine performance by all was achieved.
