New Zealand Business Hall Of Fame Induction

Hunter represented Otago Boys’ High School and read the citation for Choie Sew Hoy (1838-1901) who was one of 8 2017 laureate’s that were being inducted into the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame. Choie Sew Hoy was a successful gold miner, merchant and entrepreneur. At the age of only 13 he left Canton province in China due to war conditions and pursued a gold mining career in California, USA. He then moved to Victoria, Australia and worked as a merchant rather than a miner before immigrating to Dunedin, New Zealand in 1868. In 1888 he pioneered the dredging of river flats with the ‘Sew Hoy Dredge’ which was the leading gold-dredging design in the world. The dredge was assembled on the Shotover River and subsequently triggered the first Otago gold dredging boom.

On the evening Hunter was hosted by the Sew Hoy family party who have a long association with Otago Boys’ High School. The awards were run by the Young Enterprise Trust and on the evening 8 Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme students from throughout the country were selected by the inductees families to read the citations. Hunter is currently CEO of Otago Boys’ High School YES company ‘Top Socks’ – www.topsocks.nz who currently supply school socks to both current students, old boys and the wider community.
