Year 11 Geography

Shaking up the classroom

Kate HopeJuly 1, 2024

Year 11 Geography students explore earthquakes.

Geography students have been learning about the fascinating and often devastating world of earthquakes, with a particular focus on their impacts on Te Waipounamu.

Here students are competing to design and build the most resilient structures capable of withstanding tremors from a shake plate. This activity was designed to enhance the students' understanding of seismic activity and the importance of sound engineering and architecture. The challenge includes three levels of simulation:

1. 2011 Christchurch Earthquake: Demonstrating the intensity of shaking felt in New Brighton.

2. 2016 Kaikoura Earthquake: Illustrating the shaking experienced in both Christchurch and Wellington.

Did any structures survive?
