Ngā Manu Kōrero speech competitions were held on Friday last week in Invercargill. A group of about 40 students from Otago Boys' and Otago Girls' travelled down to support the four speakers from the two schools. 

Courage - Most of this term we, as a school, have heard a lot of the word “courage”. When we hear “courage” most of us know it’s a good thing to have, but do we really understand what courage actually is or can be?

On Wednesday 29th June, the students in the Year 13 Business Studies class attended the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme’s ‘Otago Regional Dragons Den Competition’ for young entrepreneurs. 

First of all, I would like to thank Mr Hall for the opportunity to speak today. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Tobias and I am an international student.

Currently in Design Graphics the students are designing all manner of things. There are lamps, sleep-outs, houses, furniture, electronic devices, transportable buildings, letter boxes, the list goes on. 

This term clocks were made by Year 10 students as one of their projects for the Year 10 Wood Technology course. The students have to develop a design for their clock and then construct it using different skills and materials in the workshop. Some students used the CNC Router to cut out their designs while others used more traditional methods to create their clocks.

Year 13 student Wyatt Reed is participating in the Gateway programme and is hosted by South City Panel Beaters.

Our academic prefect leaders are currently supporting junior students in their revision programmes for exams.  

Combining soldering skills with design and creativity Year 9 Electronics students created their awesome 3D electronic sculptures.

Our Year 11 Science students responded to an invitation to visit the microbiology laboratories at the University of Otago with enthusiasm. They spent a morning exploring the features of microorganisms, their uses in food, decomposition and their role as pathogens.

Year 10 students have been looking at different countries and the different foods from these countries.

Otago Boys' High School has a strong history of success in the Biological Sciences with many past students gaining entry into competitive courses such as Medicine, Physiotherapy and Dentistry. This is due to hard work on the part of the students and also the opportunities taken along the way. For example our top science scholars; Tim Chisholm, William Pelet, Johnny Mottershead supplemented their school learning with the Olympiad program.

Congratulations to Josh Kellett who last weekend travelled to Invercargill to play in the South Island Under 19 Badminton tournament where he won the mixed doubles with Emily Perry from St Hildas. An outstanding achievement especially considering he was playing two years above his age group!

Last weekend the OBHS 2nd XV played the South Otago 1st XV taking out the win 32 -27.  Well done to everyone involved!

The winter interschool fixture with Christchurch Boys' High School will be held in Christchurch on Tuesday 5 July.

The Parents Association is once again offering the community the opportunity to purchase these delicious cheese rolls.

Otago Boys' High School will close at 1.30pm for tuition on Friday 8th July,  to allow our teachers to run parent interviews for our hostel students.
