The Rector Richard Hall addresses the students during the Summer Blues Assembly this week.

The start of a new term, starts the new school theme. This terms theme for our school is courage and honour and this is what I will be talking to you about today. 

The team of eight OBHS boys, fourteen Cashmere High students and three teachers have returned 20 days after leaving for the trip to NASA’s Space Camp at Huntsville aka “Rocket City”.

During the week the Year 9 classes, as part of our introduction to OBHS and its surrounds unit visited Toitu Otago Settlers Museum.

During the holidays Year 13 student Flynn Meyer supported the Parafed Otago Athletes by assisting at the Junior Disability Games in Cambridge.  Well done Flynn on your continuing support and work in the community.

Visitors to the Otago Museum on Sunday 1st May were treated to a variety of performances of haka and waiata Māori by Dunedin’s leading kapa haka groups, including our very own Wairua Puhou. The performances marked the closing of the Hākui: Women of Kāi Tahu Exhibition.

A group of our students accompanied kaumatua, and veterans, David Ellison and Bob Tikao, to the Dawn Service on Anzac Day.

The Summer Blues Assembly which was held on Tuesday acknowledged the achievements of those young men who have excelled in their sporting endeavours already this year.

On the last day of term 1 the Year 11 Physical Education classes ran a futsal tournament for local primary schools. Over two weeks in the planning, the ‘Battle for the Hills’ was played out at the school’s re-developed tennis courts with Wakari School being crowned inaugural winners.

Competing for Otago at NPC senior level, playing in the AFLNZ premiership in Auckland weekly during term 1  and representing the New Zealand Hawks at Under 16 (level 1 Academy) and Under 18 (level 2 Academy).

Year 12 student Ewan Syme is one step closer to reaching his dream – to race at the Olympics!

During the school holidays Year 9 student Ollie Bixley took part in the South Island Schools Orienteering Championships in Christchurch.  

 Several OBHS students attended the National Age Group Swimming Championships in Wellington on the first week of the school holidays.

Congratulations to Mile Nafatali and Lloyd McGee who have been selected in the NZ Junior Mens Development team who will travel to Australia in September.
