Otago Community Trust —

It has been very exciting to see the recent developments taking place at Te Rauone Beach.

In 2020 Otago Community Trust provided a $120,000 grant to the Harrington Point Community Society Inc to support the significant regeneration of Te Rauone Beach. In 2022, the Trust granted $21,000 to the final stage of the project, the development of a playground for the beach reserve.

The Harington Point Community Society was formed in 1982 as the Harington Point Crib Owners Association. In recent years the society has focused on amenity improvements and conservation projects and has completed many projects that have improved the area.

After completing a survey of the community, the Harrington Point Community Society was able to form a clear understanding of the community's needs and desires in terms of what equipment the new playground should have. Many people also expressed the idea of installing a basketball court as there was nothing similar for people to use on the peninsula. It was clear that this playground should cater to children of all ages and abilities and there was also a keen desire to provide a range of equipment that included climbing sections that were challenging to exercise both their body and mind.

Recently the reserve has seen the construction of a new car park, a mini basketball court installed, and the first community planting taking place during which 300 shrubs were planted, the first of several thousand to be planted throughout the reserve.

The new addition of the playground is sure to establish Te Rauone as a destination that all can enjoy.
