Our Grantees - Unveiling Forestry Pathways

Otago Community Trust —

The Forestry Pathways program at Tokomairiro High School is providing practical education and hands-on experience - empowering young students to discover their potential in the forestry industry.

Lynda Allan, the Training Programme Manager at Tokomairiro Training Centre, explains that the Forestry Pathways Programme aims to provide a practical and hands-on learning experience, helping students develop self-assurance and discover a genuine passion for learning. By acquiring the necessary skills, they are equipped for success in one of New Zealand's crucial primary industries.

"The Forestry Pathways Programme is carefully designed as a level 2/3 course, providing students with comprehensive knowledge and skills in the forestry industry. It prepares them for employment in areas such as silviculture, logging, and associated industries, or enables them to pursue further education at the tertiary level."

Over the past three years, 27 students have successfully graduated from the Forestry Pathways Programme, and this number is set to grow as more young individuals embrace the opportunity to thrive in this empowering educational journey.

Otago Community Trust is pleased to have approved two grants to the programme to date, $23,000 in October 2022 and $19,611 in September 2021.

As part of the Term 2 programme for 2023, students recently embarked on an unforgettable overnight tour to Southland, exploring various forestry-related industries. The tour commenced at the Leithfield Nursery in Edendale, where they witnessed the pine tree seedling raising process from its early stages. This experience provided a deep understanding of the intricate processes involved in nurturing seedlings.

Students also visited "Zentec," known as Clogger NZ, a factory specializing in manufacturing Personal Protective Gear (PPE) for forestry workers. They received a thorough Health & Safety induction from the company's H&S manager before witnessing the production of essential protective gear, such as leather trousers, chaps, and boots.

The tour culminated with a visit to the Niagara Sawmill & Timber Remanufacturing facility. Here, students witnessed the entire forestry and log processing journey, gaining valuable insights into the diverse range of timber products produced.

It is great to see that the Forestry Pathways Programme continues to thrive, providing students with a solid foundation and real-world exposure to diverse opportunities in the forestry sector.

The dedication of Tokomairiro High School's staff and the support of the Otago Community Trust are instrumental in paving the way for more success stories and cultivating a generation of skilled and passionate individuals ready to make their mark in the forestry industry.
