Our Grantees - Tennis Otago Stage 1 Redevelopment Complete

Melanie McAtamney —

Plans to redevelop the Logan Park Tennis Centre have been in the pipeline for many years. Excitingly, Stage 1 of the redevelopment has now been completed.

Otago Community Trust chair Diccon Sim attended the offical opening of the newly named Stevenson Tennis Centre Stage 1 redevelopment on Saturday 15th of May.

Tennis Otago announced plans for the two-year, $1.7million face-lift for the ageing Logan Park Tennis Centre in late 2019. The first stage included eight new courts, resurfacing of two further courts and general upgrades to the fencing and surrounding areas. There has also been some reconfiguration of the courts to allow for a better player and spectator experience.

Otago Community Trust chair Diccon Sim said while upgrades to the Logan Park Tennis Centre have been a long time in the making, it is great to see the first stage now complete and tournaments already underway on the newly resurfaced courts.

Tennis Otago chairman John Alexander said the $350,000 grant from Otago Community Trust, along with other funding we’ve received, has helped Tennis Otago create a facility that will go a long way in opening opportunities for tennis across Otago.

Guest speakers at the official opening included Julie Paterson - Tennis New Zealand CEO who commented that:

“We know from Sport NZ and worldwide research, that quality, safe facilities are a large driver for people’s participation in sport. Tennis NZ is very proud of Tennis Otago for undertaking this project …
…. Logan Park has enormous potential to be a community tennis hub, for Dunedin, Otago, the South Island and NZ.”

Planning for stage 2 has already begun with a show court and lighting likley to be part of the second stage. Tennis Otago's indicative timeline for this is:

  • Late 2021 - Finalise Stage 2 partners and design.
  • Early 2022 - Stage 2 funding applications including Lotteries. Stage 2 tender process.
  • Late 2022 - Begin work on Stage 2.
  • 2023 - Complete Stage 2.
