Join Kiwibank as they kick off nominations phase of The Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards | Ngā Tohu Pou Kōhure o Aotearoa! 

For five weeks – from 25 July to 31 August – Kiwibank invite you to put forth your champions of positive change. Awarded across seven categories and celebrating people from every age, stage and background; this is your chance to shine a spotlight on the people who matter to you.

The Awards

Nominations can be made in one or more of the seven award categories:

Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year

The most prestigious national award honouring people for their contribution to the wellbeing of our country. Proven, inspirational and passionate, these are the people that New Zealand is proud to call their own.

University of Canterbury Young New Zealander of the Year

The leaders of tomorrow who are brimming with the potential to build a bright future for Aotearoa. They are the ones who are striving to improve themselves, their communities and their nation.

Ryman Healthcare Senior New Zealander of the Year

The people who are creating a legacy for tomorrow. The ones who have made a positive contribution to Aotearoa later in their life, actively involved in making the world around them a better place.

Spark New Zealand Innovator of the Year

These are the game changers in their field. Those who have used their insight and their passion to make an impact. They are the ones who, in the spirit of Kiwi inventiveness and resourcefulness, have created a better New Zealand.

Ministry for the Environment New Zealand Environmental Hero of the Year

The people ensuring the future of our environment. These are the ones who have made a remarkable contribution to restoring our environment and/or protecting our unique species.

Mitre 10 New Zealand Community of the Year

The communities who have shown the best of community spirit. A group of people that together have made an outstanding impact on communities they serve. Their achievements enhance the social, economic, cultural or environmental prosperity of New Zealanders

Kiwibank New Zealand Local Hero of the Year

These are the individuals who have made a positive difference in their corner of Aotearoa. From Cape Reinga to Bluff, these Kiwi show selflessness and determination to make a difference.

Each category will have one award winner selected from three finalists. All New Zealand citizens 15 years of age and over are eligible to be nominated for the Awards.

The regional and national judging panel includes representatives comprising of the awards sponsors, community leaders and independent experts.
