What leaders of incorporated societies need to know about the new Bill

Otago Community Trust —

The Incorporated Societies Bill was introduced into Parliament last month and will modernise the old Act that was written in 1908!

There are over 24,000 incorporated societies in New Zealand. They promote a broad range of community activities including sport, recreation, culture, education, health, social services, philanthropy, emergency relief, environmental protection, animal protection and religion.

The Institute of Directors have written an informative article on the Incorporated Societies Bill that will help you understand what the changes might look like and how these changes may affect incorporated societies.

Board members and leaders will need to understand how their societies are affected by the Bill and what they need to do to transition to the new regime or what other alternative options are suitable (eg merging or ceasing activities).

Public submissions are currently being accepted and close on Friday 28 May.
