Our Grantees - Sticks 'n Stones

Otago Community TrustDecember 14, 2022

The Sticks 'n Stones grantee video captures how a youth led bullying prevention organisation founded in Central Otago is empowering our young people through ongoing training programmes and regular opportunities to collaborate, learn and lead in the area of bullying prevention. New Zealand has one of the highest rates of bullying in the world, so this korero is critically important for our tamariki and rangatahi.

Bullying has widespread implications not only for the students exposed to it (those who are bullied, those doing the bullying and the observers), but to their family wellbeing and the culture of schools and communities.

Bullying is most common for 11-14 year olds so this is a really important time for young people to have the tools and skills to feel confident to prevent, recognise and challenge it.

Sticks 'n Stones create programmes, opportunities, workshops and events for 8 -18 year olds that empower them to have the skills, confidence and connections to be themselves and support their peers to feel accepted and respected and for bullying to be a thing of the past.

Otago Community Trust became involved in providing funding support to Sticks 'n Stones in 2019 and has provided annual grants to support the youth lead organisation since then, the most recent grant was $50,000 in May this year.

This grantee video provides a unique insight into how aspects of the programme are delivered in the classroom, what students are gaining from it and the value it provides to the local school community.
