New Fund: Youth Movement Fund Aotearoa

Otago Community TrustNovember 8, 2022

The Youth Movement Fund Aotearoa, launched in early November, it is an innovative grassroots fund supporting young people and youth movements in NZ.

Youth Movement Fund Aotearoa will be using participatory practice to distribute $750,000 over the next four years, focused on five key areas of impact:

  • Decolonisation and Anti-Racism
  • Climate Justice
  • Economic Justice
  • Disability Justice
  • Takatāpui and Queer Liberation

Their aim is to back youth movements to transform Aotearoa and the world while nurturing cross-movement collaboration, kinship and solidarity.

The fund is grounded in the idea that better movement funding decisions are made if they are led and informed by lived experience, and the grants committee is made up of 14 passionate youth champions aged 18 - 35 who work in social movements that focus on one (or more) of the five key areas above.

What criteria are applied to grant applications?

Youth Movement Fund Aotearoa are looking for youth-led movements, collectives or communities who take organised action to build collective power, transform systems and create new futures. In particular they are looking for:

  • A collective vision, dream or imagining for the future
  • An articulation of how you think change will happen, what your movement will do to achieve it and how you will know if it’s working
  • Ideas that have the potential to become transformational

Youth Movement Fund Aotearoa are especially interested in funding:

  • People with lived experience of the kaupapa they work on
  • Movements that are intentional in their efforts to build power across difference
  • Ideas that are innovative. We understand systems change requires experimentation
  • Strategies that strengthen and nurture connections and relationships within movements - we think this is particularly important after years of lockdowns and the pandemic
  • Things that are good for movement health e.g. initiatives that support wellbeing or up-skilling in facilitation, mediation and conflict resolution
