Appendix IV - Definitions

Here are some terms that you may encounter as you read about distance learning.

Please remember that the meanings of these words are not definitive and may vary either subtly or dramatically depending on the context or the literature within which they appear. The following are generally accepted uses for the words.

Blended Learning

This term usually refers to the combination (blending) of online and computer technologies with more traditional strategies for teaching and learning.

Distance Education

  • is planned learning and teaching;
  • learning normally occurs in a different place from teaching;
  • requires special course design and instructional techniques;
  • makes use of various technologies to facilitate communication and interaction;
  • needs special organisational and administrative arrangements.

Flexible Learning

This refers to the dimensions of a curriculum or course that can vary, depending on how they are structured. Degrees of flexibility can be in-built into any curriculum or course to limit or enhance/allow choice and variety of access for both teachers and students.
