Carpark redesign

Local company Dunedin Venues Management Ltd (DVML) has been working with our students on this and other projects.

The Forsyth Barr Stadium has a long thin carpark accessed off Anzac Avenue. DVML asked for help from one of our Engineering Technologies students to redesign the carpark. They wanted to keep a bus lane while also achieving these goals:

  • To increase the number of parks
  • To reduce the security risk of a vehicle ramming incident
  • To improve the traffic flow

Lukas Kan took this project on and began by checking the standard NZS2890 for parking facilities. After several iterations he produced his recommended design which met all DVML's requirements.

His design has a one way traffic flow around the carpark, directed by traffic islands as well as road markings. Moving the carpark entrance/exit and reversing the direction of travel for buses meant that buses no longer needed a separate lane. Lukas added bollards to prevent a vehicle ramming attack, and his design has spaces for 24 more cars to use the parking facility.
