New water valve cover installed in Dunedin street by Otago Polytechnic

Testing under pressure

Our Engineering staff have tested the performance under pressure of a proposed new plastic cover.

Otago Polytechnic has a Denison universal testing machine which applies pressure at very specific loads. Gerard Quinn and Adam Liberatore used the Denison to conduct a series of tests for the Dunedin City Council's water department.

The department wanted to test a new plastic cover for a water valve, which was connected by tabs into aluminium housing. Gerard and Adam designed and implemented a series of tests which applied force to the plastic cover, to investigate overall strength while inspecting any deflection after each increment.

These results were reported back to the Dunedin City Council for consideration. The new plastic covers can now be seen on our city streets.
