Technology-enhanced learning

How might we help students to learn online as well as in the classroom?

We want to offer courses with online content that offers the best experience for our learners through blended learning, combining online and face-to-face learning in one course. To achieve this the online components of the courses need to be developed in a consistent, functional and aesthetically pleasing way.

Our Learning and Teaching Development team developed a template to help facilitate technology-enhanced learning within our blended courses. The template was designed to meet minimum requirements and best practice principles. It includes optional additional elements that staff are encouraged to use. The template was piloted during the D4LS project (Design for Learner Success) and improved iteratively based on feedback from both academic staff and students.

Three major advantages of using a blended course template are improvements in consistency, efficiency and quality. Consistency in format, icons and other design elements both within each course and across each programme helps learners to become increasingly familiar and comfortable with their online learning environment. Using the template saves staff time in course development and maintains the quality across the board. The team works closely with academic staff and has also created a set of online training modules to help them to use the template effectively.
